Online Philosophy Tuition
|
|
Introduction
I have devised an effective method of internet-based
online philosophy tuition
for my private students.
It combines the expertise from my
career in e-learning, with my
philosophy teaching experience,
and my training as a face-to-face and
online tutor.
I update the system regularly in the
light of new internet developments and technologies.
There are details of
UK online philosophy degrees
on another page.

Private Philosophy Tuition
The best advice that I ever received from my philosophy
tutors was "write often!". For it's
only when you commit your ideas to paper that you begin to
see more clearly where the difficulties lie. My method of
online philosophy tuition follows this advice, and is based
on the University of Oxford's tutorial system: write your
ideas down, and then defend what you have written to your
tutor.
The initial consultation serves two purposes. First, I get
to know your motivation for private philosophy tuition.
This tends to be:
Secondly, the initial consultation gives me
the information I need to devise a study plan tailored to
your learning aims.

Online A-Level Philosophy Tuition
I provide online philosophy lessons to A-level philosophy students.
My teaching strategy focuses on extended examination preparation.
Through a series of online tutorials, each discussing a specific
essay topic, my students build up a bank of strategically-chosen
essay plans; at the same time they hone their essay-writing technique.
I am an active philosophy researcher, and regularly attend lectures
and seminars. So my A-level students are not fed stale ideas, which
bore examiners, but are expertly guided in the very latest
philosophical thinking.
My experience as an university philosophy lecturer means that
my students are well-prepared for any
subsequent philosophy university-entrance interviews or examinations.

Method of Online Philosophy Tuition
The backbone of the tuition system is the tailored
study plan, devised in the initial consultation, which comprises
essay titles selected to build up your understanding
of the topic systematically.
For each essay title in the study plan:
|
1
|
We have a 30 minute tutorial to discuss the essay
and how to approach it.
|
|
2
|
You write the essay and email it to me.
|
|
3
|
I read the essay, annotate it with comments, and
return it to you.
|
|
4
|
You read my comments and reflect upon them.
|
5
|
We have a 45 minute online tutorial discussing the
essay and any further points that have arisen from your reflection.
|
We repeat the process as often and as
frequently as required. I can advise on the technology
required for the online internet tutorial.

Western Philosophy Tuition
The major division between philosophical traditions is typically drawn
between eastern and western philosophy. Contemporary western philosophy
is then typically further sub-divided into analytic and continental
philosophy; though I would say that this division marks more a difference
of style.
I offer philosophy tuition in the western analytic tradition. This esteems
clarity of expression and rigour of argument as its cardinal virtues.
The online philosophy tuition that I offer places considerable
emphasis on acquiring these virtues: this means, amongst other things,
learning to pay careful attention to important conceptual distinctions.
Analytic philosophy is often, largely for purposes of curriculum design,
divided into theoretical and practical/normative philosophy.
Theoretical philosophy
encompasses metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of logic and language,
and the philosophy of mind. Practical or normative philosophy covers
ethics, aesthetics,
political philosophy and the philosophy of religion. My expertise is in
theoretical philosophy, in particular epistemology, mind and language.
