Online Philosophy Tuition

Private Online Philosophy Tuition

I have devised an effective method of internet-based online philosophy tuition for my private students, based on the Oxford Tutorial System.

The tuition system is easily adapted to suit school, college and university philosophy students.

It combines the expertise from my career in e-learning, with my philosophy teaching experience, and my training as a face-to-face and online tutor.

There are more details of my online tuition system below.

Free Discussion Of Your Online Philosophy Tuition Needs

Before embarking on a course of online philosophy tuition I typically have a preliminary chat with students; at no charge.

The allows us to discuss your needs and motivations, and, if necessary, for me to devise your personalised study plan.

The study plan forms the backbone of the tutorials comprising your online study, and in most cases consists of essays and mock exam questions.

Oxford Tutorial System Applied To Online Philosophy Tuition

The best advice that I ever received from my philosophy tutors was "write often!". For it's only when you commit your ideas to paper that you begin to see more clearly where the difficulties lie.

My method of online philosophy tuition follows this advice, and is based on the tutorial system widely used at the University of Oxford; where I took my doctorate, and where I now also teach.

I select essay titles, based on past exam papers where appropriate; then for each essay:

1 I send you the essay title with readings, if appropriate.
2 You write the essay and email it to me.
3 I read the essay, annotate it with colour-coded comments, and return it to you.
4 You read my comments and reflect upon them.

We have a 45 minute online tutorial discussing the essay and any further points that have arisen from your reflection.

We essays and tutorials as often and as frequently as you require.

My comments concern not only philosophical content, but grammar, logic and argument structure. For exam candidates, I focus particularly on developing an appropriate style for exam answers.

Online Philosophy Tuition Using Skype

The majority of my online philosophy tuition is conducted via Skype, which is a free internet service for international phone and video calls; though occasional I give tuition by phone or email.

The tutorials are scheduled to last 45 minutes, but they typically continue for longer; of course at no extra charge.

During each tutorial, we discuss various points arising from the marked essay; and over a period of online philosophy tuition topics are selected to build up a systematic understanding.

Online Philosophy Tuition By Email

Although the majority of my online philosophy tuition is conducted by Skype or phone, occasionally students ask for tuition by email.

These e-tutorials can be particularly helpful for students for whom English is not their first language.

Once you have received your essay with my comments you email me with any queries that you may have, or with points for clarification; and I give detailed replies, with readings if appropriate.

The email correspondence comprises a useful permanent record of your study.
