Internet Philosophy Tutor
I have been an online philosophy tutor
for a number of years, both at the
University of Oxford and to independent students.
Prior to that I was an e-learning consultant
at the University, heading the unit responsible for delivering its online
courses over the internet.
My
method of e-tutoring philosophy
to independent students combines my
philosophy tutoring experience
, and my e-learning expertise.

Improving Philosophy Exam Technique
I have marked examination scripts, and
moderated students for course credits, at universities
and colleges in London, Oxford and Reading; and so am
very familiar with the simple
kinds of mistake, which candidates make, that can easily be
avoided.
I regularly prepare students for examination, advising on
all aspects of successful philosophy exam technique: revision strategy,
preparing essay plans, selecting and ordering exam questions,
writing style, and argument construction.
If you are preparing for a philosophy exam, and would like
an online philosophy tutor to help improve your chances
of success, then I'd be happy to receive your email:

Online Philosophy Tutor for a University Philosophy Entrance Exam
University entrance exams to study philosophy are typically designed
to test your capacity to reason
and to think for yourself. The exam is never aimed simply to test
your knowledge of what certain famous philosophers may have thought.
With a combination of podcasting and Skype technology, I offer a
simple but effective simulation of university philosophy entrance
exams and interviews. The simulation provides focused feedback
to help you improve
all aspects of your entrance application, both written and aural.

your university entrance exam, I'd be happy to

Online Tutor to Help with your University Application to Study Philosophy
With the global economic downturn, and the subsequent squeeze on
public finances, the number of university places has been
significantly reduced; but,
at the same time, as job opportunities decline, gaining a good
university degree has never been more important.
As competition for university places becomes more competitive it is
crucial that your university philosophy application is as strong
as possible.
I have considerable experience in successfully advising candidates on
selecting the strongest philosophy departments; presenting themselves
most effectively in the application process; and helping to
prepare candidates for any philosophy entrance exam.

your university philosophy application, I'd be happy to

Online A-Level Philosophy Tutor
I provide online philosophy tutorials to A-level students.
My tutoring focuses, from the beginning, on preparing for the exams.
Each e-tutorial develops a carefully-chosen
theme, so that my students systematically acquire their own library of
strategically-selected essay plans.
They also improve their essay-writing
and argument-construction skills.
I am a research-active tutor, hence my A-level philosophy students
are taught the very latest philosophical ideas; this means that their
examiners are not bored by stale, regurgitated thoughts.
My experience as a university philosophy tutor enables me to coach
my students for their university-entrance interviews and exams.

Tutoring in Argument Construction and Criticism
Good philosophy is based on good argument. But what is a good argument?
My area of philosophical specialism is theoretical philosophy, which
encompasses logic, and the philosophy of language: the two disciplines
that examine the nature of arguments.
A typical series of online philosophy tutorials in argument construction
and criticism covers the following topics: validity, soundness,
proof, systems of logic, fallacies.
If you'd like online tuition to improve your arguments, I'd be happy to

Research-active Philosophy Tutor
Philosophy is a constantly evolving subject; with scholarly developments
in specialist topics like logic and epistemology, as well as in
the study of the works of ancient philosophers.
I am a research-active philosophy tutor, which means that my tuition
reflects the latest thinking in my specialist areas: philosophy of mind,
philosophy of language, epistemology, philosophy of science,
metaphysics, and the works of the later Wittgenstein.

New Student Seeking a Philosophy e-Tutor?
Here are some questions that invite deep reflection, and
which often first get people interested in philosophy.
|
What does it mean to say 'God exists'?
|
|
What is knowledge?
|
|
Are there limits to what we can know?
|
|
Do certain kinds of knowledge escape science?
|
|
What am I, exactly?
|
|
Is my conscious mind something quite distinct from my brain?
|
As your online philosophy tutor I won't provide answers
to these questions; rather, the aim will be to help you develop
the philosophical skills to tackle the questions yourself. If
you have a flair for the subject, you might like to go
on to
study online for a diploma or degree over the internet.

Online Wittgenstein Tutor
Wittgenstein is a great, perhaps the greatest,
philosopher of the twentieth century. His writing style and, relatedly,
the structure of his argument, is strikingly original; this can
lead to difficulties of interpretation. In particular, it is all too
easy to slip into superficial and facile readings of his subtle
thought.
Wittgenstein's writing is rich with imagery and aphorism: elsewhere on my
website is a page of
illustrated Wittgenstein aphorisms and quotations, many of which
appear throughout the site.
I studied Wittgenstein for my doctorate, and now teach his later
philosophy at the University of Oxford. I have also taught the
philosophy of Wittgenstein to students at the University of London
and to private students.
If you would like a tutorial on any aspect of Wittgenstein's philosophy,
then I'd be happy to receive your email:

Thinking of Studying Online for a Diploma or Degree in Philosophy?
It's possible to study, at home, for a
diploma or a BA(Hons) degree in philosophy from the University
of London, from anywhere in the world. Simply register as
an External Student with the University, choose the courses
that interest you. You study in your own time, and at your
own pace. You do, however, have to arrange your own internet tutoring.
Alternatively, the University of Oxford, although it does
not yet offer entire degrees by distance learning, does offer
a number of online undergraduate level 1 courses through its
Department for Continuing Education. Having been a philosophy
tutor on their courses, I can thoroughly recommend them.

online philosophy degree
