A great deal of undergraduate teaching at the University of Oxford is
done, not by college fellows or members of faculty, but by part-time
tutors, employed on a casual, termly basis.
This small army of part-time tutors comprises mainly graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
I became a part-time philosophy tutor at Oxford shortly before receiving my
doctorate, and
have taught there since; for various colleges and for the Department for Continuing Education.
I teach a variety of courses, both face-to-face and online; to conventional university undergraduates and
to extra-mural students.
Part-time teaching suits my lifestyle: it allows my partner Alice and me plenty of opportunity to pursue our joint
passion of rock climbing and mountaineering.
(Alice is a freelance mountaineering instructor.)
